The soft full-grain leather shoulder tote is cut from fluid satin with a quiet, candle-lit sheen, fully lined so it reads opaque in daylight and flash alike.
Like every Hugo Caesar Tassi piece, the Esquilina is finished by hand: a concealed closure, real linings, and seams sewn to last. It is offered in 2 colors from the imperial palette — Travertine, Basalt — and built to be worn for years, not a single season.

Of the seven hills, the Esquiline was where Rome kept its gardens and its composure.
The Esquilina is built like the architecture it is named for: a barrel body that holds its line, twin top handles arched like a vault, and a single polished ring at each shoulder where the leather gathers and turns. Nothing on it asks to be noticed, which is precisely why it is.
We cut it from full-grain leather and let the hide keep its own pebbled grain rather than press it flat. Over a season the surface warms and softens to the hand without losing the shape, so the bag carries the same quiet authority empty on a column or full on the arm.
Roman luxury was never about ornament. It was about proportion that lasts.
The interior is sized for a day in motion: a long wallet, a folded scarf, a phone and keys sit upright against the structured walls, and a slim leather tag on a thin loop keeps small things close. The handles drop to a comfortable shoulder reach yet stand to attention when the bag is set down.
Finished with fine gold-tone hardware and tonal saddle stitching, the Esquilina reads as evening as easily as it does daylight. It is the kind of piece you reach for without thinking and keep for far longer than a season.
What she said after wearing it
Took a punt on the lighter colourway and the Travertine is the softest warm stone shade in real daylight, not grey, not beige, somewhere in between. The full-grain has that faint pull-up sheen when the sun hits it. I keep finding excuses to carry it.
Slings over the shoulder and disappears.
Opened it and got that proper hide smell straightaway, none of that chemical coated-finish thing you get on cheaper bags. The full-grain has tiny natural marks here and there which I actually love, because it means it's the real skin and not stamped plastic.
Looked up the Esquiline hill after it arrived and the whole quiet-gardens idea suits the bag perfectly. It carries with a sort of unhurried authority that I can't quite explain. Understated in the best way for a daytime piece.
No complaint about the bag itself, the full-grain leather is supple and the Basalt is a deep handsome charcoal. On me the strap sits a touch long and the open top gapes a little against my frame, so I'm popping to a leather shop to have the strap shortened a notch. Entirely a me thing, the tote is beautiful and I'll carry it for years.
The Esquilina is exactly the soft, barrel-bodied tote I hoped for and the Travertine leather is even prettier in person. My only frustration was my own bank, which sat on the first overseas charge for a couple of days to check it was really me before HCT could even send it out. Once that cleared, dispatch was quick. The bag was worth the wait.

Hard to fault the bag, the leather is genuinely full-grain and the shape is lovely on the shoulder. What knocked my rating was the shipping in the middle, where the tracking page froze on one location and went silent for the best part of a fortnight with no new scans, so I assumed it was lost. Then with no warning it landed on my doorstep. The Basalt tote is gorgeous, the limbo just frayed my nerves.

What sold me is that it slouches a little when empty but the barrel body never collapses into a sad heap. Holds a laptop sleeve, my water bottle and a paperback with room over. The leather is supple from day one, no breaking-in stiffness at all.
Let me start somewhere different, because the bag genuinely deserves five and I'm gutted to be writing this. The Esquilina is everything, soft full-grain, that warm Travertine, beautifully made. The single star is purely the delivery: the driver handed it off to someone along my street without a word to me, and it took the better part of three days of door-knocking to work out where it had ended up. Once I had it in hand I forgave everything, but the chase was miserable.

Chose the dark Basalt and it reads as a deep charcoal-black depending on the light, very rich. Pairs with my camel coat and my navy one without a second thought. For a daily bag it's quietly become the one I reach for first.
I'm fussy about leather and this passed the test the second I held it. Properly supple, a little weight to it that tells you it's solid, and the grain is fine and even. It folds and creases the way good full-grain should, getting better with handling.
