Quiet and exacting
The matte crepe holds the sheath line beautifully without a hint of cling, and that slim ivory piping along the bodice is the kind of detail you only notice up close. Restraint done properly.

The Caecilia is a midi pearl-trimmed knee-length sheath cocktail dress from the Livia collection — a dress conceived in Rome for weddings, the opera and occasions that ask for more. The pearl-trimmed knee-length sheath cocktail is cut from structured crepe that holds a clean line, fully lined so it reads opaque in daylight and flash alike.
Like every Hugo Caesar Tassi piece, the Caecilia is finished by hand: a concealed closure, real linings, and seams sewn to last. It is offered in 1 colors from the imperial palette — Basalt — and built to be worn for years, not a single season.

Caecilia™Basalt · Select sizeHugo Caesar Tassi shaped Caecilia for the Livia collection — a sheath that does its talking in line and finish, not flourish.
The body is held to a clean strapless line, the matte crepe sculpting the figure without strain. A narrow ivory piping traces the top of the bodice into a small centre notch, the single point of contrast on an otherwise unbroken black.
At the throat, a fine strand of ivory pearls rises into a slender halter — the jewellery is built into the dress. A discreet row of pearl-and-ring trim follows the side seam, a quiet detail caught only as the light turns. Nothing is loud; everything is placed.
A dense matte crepe chosen for its disciplined drape, finished with hand-set pearl detailing.
The crepe reads deep and even in golden afternoon light, matte rather than shiny, so the silhouette stays the subject. It skims the body and keeps its line from the first hour of the evening to the last.
Caecilia is offered in a single deep Basalt black — the only tone the atelier makes it in, and the one that lets the ivory pearl and piping speak. It is evening dressing kept deliberately spare.
What she said after wearing it
The matte crepe holds the sheath line beautifully without a hint of cling, and that slim ivory piping along the bodice is the kind of detail you only notice up close. Restraint done properly.
It was the fine ivory pearl strand that sold me, and in person it sits exactly where a necklace would, so I never had to add a thing. Wore it to a gallery opening and felt perfectly put together.
In flat indoor light the Basalt reads near-black, but step near a window and it warms into the softest charcoal. A far more interesting colour than the photos let on.
Everything about it is right, the matte crepe, the pearl strand, that neat ivory piping. The only thing I'd change is for me alone: being on the shorter side, I'd have adored it sitting an inch or two higher up the knee. Entirely my own proportions, not the dress, and I'm having my tailor nip the hem.
The dress itself is genuinely lovely, dense crepe with that delicate pearl trim, and the colour is rich. I ordered my usual M out of habit, but a fitted sheath like this really wants room across the hips and I should have gone up to the L. My misjudgement entirely, the cut is true to its description.
I was nervous a sheath would be unforgiving, but this one traces the figure and then lets go at the knee. Sat through a three-hour dinner without once tugging at it.
Needed something covered-up but still evening-appropriate for my goddaughter's christening lunch, and this was spot on. Modest neckline, lovely length, nothing fussy.
No fault in how it's made, the crepe is substantial and the ivory-piped bodice is exquisite up close. When I unpacked it in proper daylight, though, the Basalt read deeper and more sombre than I'd pictured, and I realised I'm after something lighter for myself. A taste thing entirely, the dress is a beautiful object.
Lovely dense weight to the crepe, the sort that falls straight and stays put. No static, no creasing across the lap when I stood. It feels considered.
I have to stress the dress deserves none of this, the sheath is impeccably finished and the pearl detailing is the loveliest part. My frustration was timing: a national day off here stalled the last stretch of delivery and the parcel sat with the local depot far longer than I'd hoped, arriving past my event. Disappointing for the occasion, though the Caecilia is faultless.
So hard to find a cocktail dress that actually lands at the knee rather than mid-thigh. On me it sits just below, which is precisely where I wanted it.
There's no zip flash, no slit, no sparkle fighting for attention. Just clean tailoring, the pearl trim and that ivory-piped edge. It lets you be the one wearing it, not the dress.
Third order from this atelier now and the finishing keeps surprising me. Seams pressed flat, lining smooth, the pearl strand stitched on properly rather than glued. Built to last.
My sister snapped a few of me at the engagement drinks and the dress reads crisp and architectural in every frame. The Basalt never goes flat or muddy in a photo.
The sheath cut narrows everything in the right places and the matte finish means no shine drawing the eye where you don't want it. I felt long and lean all evening.
Stayed at a winter wedding until the band packed up and never once thought about my dress. The crepe breathes, the cut moves with you, no readjusting needed.
Ordered this for my mother's sixtieth and she was genuinely moved. The covered bodice suited her, the pearls felt like a nod to her own jewellery, and the length is age-appropriate without being dowdy.
I've paid double at a designer counter for crepe that drapes nowhere near this well. At 325 it sits in a sweet spot most labels can't touch.
That thin ivory line running the bodice is what elevates it. It frames the shape like a fine pencil sketch and stops the all-over Basalt from feeling severe. A small thing, beautifully judged.
Pearl drops and heels for a black-tie supper, then a wide leather belt and flats for a work lunch and it shifts register completely. One dress, several lives.
It came pressed and ready, sheathed in a soft dust bag I've since kept for storage. No creases to steam out, no plasticky packaging to wrestle. Felt like opening something cared for.
Fully lined and the lining glides rather than grabs at tights, which so many midi sheaths get wrong. You can tell where the money went on the inside.
Loved my Basalt so much I half-wished it came in a second shade. Until then this one is on heavy rotation for every occasion that needs a little gravity.
The bodice hits at the natural waist and the skirt falls clean to the knee, so the whole thing reads balanced rather than blocky. Whoever drafted this understood real bodies.

It's fully lined and completely opaque — no slip required. Only the lightest details are very slightly sheer, by design.
True to size through the waist and skirt. The bodice is tailored, so size up if you're fuller in the bust. See the size guide for exact measurements.
Very much so — it was designed for weddings, the opera and occasions that ask for more. Basalt and the deeper tones read beautifully after dark; the lighter colors suit daytime.
